[kurokkasu daichi ugo ka shi ten wo tu ku]
Crocuses
push up the earth
and reach toward the sky

Crocuses sprout as if pushing up the thawing earth.
Though small, the tips of their leaves are sharp like the points of a kenzan,
as if the vanguard of spring were piercing the sky.
Their vigor seems strong enough to move the seasons themselves,
and crocuses are known as “messengers of spring,”
announcing the end of winter.
Sensing the changing of the seasons,
Migaku-san praises in this haiku the tremendous life force
that dwells within such a small plant.
