[haenawa no hatsutsuri maguro no botsu nuite funadama ni inoru kyou no houryou]

With long-lining
catch first tuna fish
while taking out their heart
thank ship spirit, Funadama
for today's good fishing

魚の心臓のことを「ボツ」または「ホシ」と言います。
初釣り鮪（まぐろ）から心臓を取り出して、これからの豊漁を願い、船霊（ふなだま）にお供えするという短歌です。

Heart of tuna is called "Botsu" or "Hoshi".
This tanka: short japanese poem
that takes out the heart from the first fishing tuna,
and offer the heart to Funadama with wishing for a good catch in the future.


※船霊（ふなだま）とは・・・船の神様です。小さな漁船は船の柱の中に、大きな漁船は船頭（せんどう）さんの部屋に祀られているそうです。

Notes:
Funadama means a sprit of ship;
In small fishing boats are enshrined in the pillars of the boat,
and in large fishing boats are enshrined in the captain's room.
