黄砂来て帰り来ぬ士の御霊かな

[kousa kite kaeri kinu shi no mitama kana]

Yellow sand flewing from distant Land
soldiers rest in peace far away
feel the Spirit coming back

母方の祖父は、母が2歳の時にビルマの地で戦死しました。

たった一人の娘を残し、

今も異国の地に眠ったままです。


母は絵を描くのが上手で、
似顔絵師さんが描いた父親の遺影を見ながら、

亡き父の顔を描き、部屋に飾っていました。

似顔絵師さんが描いた絵は写真のように白黒でしたが、

母が描いた絵は、背景がレモン色で明るく、
まるでこちらを優しく見守っているようでした。


亡き父を想い、
ずっと寂しい思いをしてきた妻へ

遠い国から御霊が黄砂となり、
愛しい人に逢いに来ているのかもしれないと、
磨さんは詠みました。

My maternal grandfather was killed in action in Burma when my mother was two years old.
Leaving only one daughter, he still sleeps in a foreign land.

My mother was good at drawing.
While looking at her father's portrait drawn by a caricature artist,
she painted her late father's face and had it on the wall in her room.

The picture drawn by the caricature artist was black and white like the photo.
The picture my mother drew had a bright lemon-colored background,
and it seemed as if he was gently watching over me.

Migaku-san composed senryu for his wife,
who has been feeling lonely for a long time, thinking of her late father.

Migaku-san felt that it may be that the spirit has turned into yellow sand from a distant country
and is coming to see the loved one.
