昭和33年頃、磨さんがトビウオ刺し網漁に出ていた頃の鳥島の風景を短歌にしました。

伊豆諸島の鳥島には、アホウドリが生息しています。

鳥島は小さな火山島で、当時は観測所だけがあり、

船の上からは、傾斜地の草の生えたところに、

20羽ほどの鳥が、白く点々と動きが見えるだけだったそうです。

遠目で見てもわかる、アホウドリの大きさに、磨さんは驚かされたようです。

風が強いときは、島陰では灰が飛んできたとか。

アホウドリは羽毛採取や火山の噴火の犠牲となり、絶滅寸前でしたが、
絶滅危惧II類　国内希少動植物種に指定され、いまでは6000羽以上が確認されているそうです。

長谷川博先生（アホウドリ先生）の積極的な保護活動のお陰ですね。

This tanka written about the scenery of Torishima when Migaku-san was out fishing for flying fish gillnets around 1958.

Short-tailed Albatrosses inhabit Torishima in the Izu Islands.

Torishima is a small volcanic island with only an observatory at that time.
From the top of the boat, Migaku-san could only see about 20 birds moving on the grassy slopes as white dots.

Migaku-san was surprised by the size of the Short-tailed Albatross, which can be seen even from a distance.

When the wind was strong, ash seemed to fly in the shade of the island.

The short-tailed albatross was on the verge of extinction after being killed by feather harvesting
and volcanic eruptions, but it was designated as an endangered group II national rare plant and animal species,
and more than 6,000 birds have been confirmed so far.
