[sumibi-yaki kemuri me ni shimu warai-gao]
Smoke from the charcoal
burns my eyes into watering
still, we laugh together.

In the autumn town, a fragrant smoky aroma drifts through the air.
It seems the town is lively this year, blessed with a plentiful catch of Pacific saury.
We are grateful for the bounty of the sea, and for the fishermen who bring it to us.
As the charcoal smoke rises and gently stings the eyes, people savor the saury, grilled to a perfect golden crisp.
On their faces bloom soft, contented smiles—
smiles filled with the quiet joy of sharing autumn’s gifts
and the simple, precious comforts of everyday life.
Migaku-san feels those smiles seemed like true fulfillment,
a warmth born from gratitude, connection, and the season’s abundance.
